The Lapidary Bench: cut your own gem

Cut a keepsake from a stone, or reshape a mined gemstone into a new form.

The Lapidary Bench is where you shape gems. It does two things: cut a keepsake from one of your growing stones, and reshape a mined gemstone into a new form.

Cut a keepsake from a stone

1. Choose a source — your Living Agate, the Artist or Mother Stone, or a piece’s Living Gemstone.

2. Pick a cut at the bench; the gem is generated from that source’s geology.

3. Your cut gem lands in your Gem Case to keep, and can be shown in the Gem Gallery.

A keepsake is a moment in time — the source keeps growing, while your gem preserves exactly how it looked when you cut it. Provenance is never lost.

Reshape a mined gemstone

You can also bring a gemstone from your collection to the bench and cut it into a new form:

- Rough → Slab → Cabochon, or

- Rough → Faceted.

This transforms the gemstone in place — it’s the same gemstone, so it keeps its identity, provenance, rarity, and full history. Its GEM-code never changes; only its form does.

When you cut a mined gemstone, you choose what happens next:

- Keep it growing — it stays a Growing gemstone, still deepening from its source.

- Freeze it — you lock in a permanent snapshot of exactly how it looks now.

Cutting only moves a gemstone forward through its forms — the source stone and every gemstone’s story stay intact, whichever path you take.
